Re: Sound Catholic Reading
“A wise heart shall acquire knowledge:
and the ear of the wise seek instruction.”
During one of our visits to various bishops in the U.S., a bishop said to me that we have two to three generations of Catholics that need to be re-catechized. Bearing in mind that a generation is twenty-five years, he is referring to those under the age of 50.
His Excellency said this acknowledging that the current generation of children, and the last few generations, have not been taught the Catholic Faith. Even worse is that they don’t know that they have not been taught the Catholic Faith.
Yet as Catholics it is our duty to know the faith, to promote it and to defend it. But how does one promote and defend what one does not know?
We see and hear proof of this lack of necessary knowledge daily in the phone calls and letters we receive.
One of the ways to learn our faith and to refresh what we have learned is through good sound Catholic reading, such as a traditional Catholic newspaper.
Pope St. Pius X was very firm in his belief of the importance of doing such reading -
“In vain you will build churches, give missions, found schools. All your work, all your efforts will be destroyed if you are not able to wield the offensive and defensive weapon of a loyal and sincere Catholic Press... I would make any sacrifice, even to pawn my ring, pectoral cross and soutane, in order to support a Catholic paper...”
A Gift for You
Having spoken to the editor of a traditional Catholic newspaper, Catholic Family News, we are pleased to be able to send you a copy of this newspaper for free. I was visiting in their warehouse and saw they had some back issues so I asked and obtained permission to send you a copy.
This paper often addresses issues about our faith, that we are contacted about. We thought you might like to see a sample. I have been a subscriber for many years and over time it has answered some of the questions I have been confronted with.
St. Padre Pio said “The time best spent is that which is spent for the glory of God and the salvation of souls. Do not cease in seeking the truth or in acquiring the greatest good.”
Please take the time to read the enclosed issue of Catholic Family News. Bear in mind that since it is an older issue, though the contents of the newspaper will not expire, the ads in the paper have likely expired or are outdated.
