Re: 54 Day Rosary Novena

J.M.J.

“Whoever desires to obtain favors from Me should make three novenas of the prayers of the Rosary, and three novenas in thanksgiving.”
March 3, 1884 at Pompeii, Italy)
(Our Lady to Fortuna Agrelli,

Dear Volunteer,

On March 3, 1884, a young girl named Fortuna Agrelli was graced with an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary and given a special devotion which she passed on to others.

At the time, young Fortuna was ill with 3 separate incurable diseases and her doctors had given up on her case saying it was hopeless.  In desperation, the young girl and her family began a novena of Rosaries.

Our Lady appeared to the girl, sitting upon a high throne, surrounded by luminous figures, holding the Divine Child on Her lap, and in Her hand a Rosary.

The sick girl greeted the Blessed Virgin with the following words: “Queen of the Holy Rosary, be gracious to me, restore me to health!  I have already prayed to Thee in a novena, O Mary, but have not yet experienced Thy aid.  I am so anxious to be cured!”

“Child,” responded the Blessed Virgin, “you have invoked Me by various titles and have always obtained favors from Me.  Now, since you have called Me by that title so pleasing to Me, ‘Queen of the Holy Rosary’, I can no longer refuse the favor you petition; for this name is most precious and dear to Me.  Make three novenas, and you shall obtain all.”

Once more, the Queen of the Holy Rosary appeared to the young girl and said, “Whoever desires to obtain favors from Me should make three novenas of the prayers of the Rosary, and three novenas in thanksgiving.”

Using this gift, the young girl was healed and restored to health.

54-Day Rosary Novena

As you know, traditionally a novena is nine days.  Thus, Our Lady’s words to young Fortuna -- “make three novenas of the prayers of the Rosary, and three novenas in thanksgiving.”

So began six novenas of rosaries -- which became known as the 54-day Rosary Novena.  The novena consists of five decades of the Rosary each day for twenty-seven days in petition; then immediately five decades each day for an additional twenty-seven days in thanksgiving, regardless of whether or not the request has been granted.

To do the novena properly -- you must pray the 54 days continually, without missing a day, and praying the indicated mysteries for that day.

The first day of the novena the Joyful Mysteries are prayed; the second day, the Sorrowful Mysteries; and the third day, the Glorious Mysteries.  The fourth day of the novena begins again with the Joyful Mysteries and continues on in that sequence throughout the 54 days of the novena.

The Miraculous Rosary Novena

It has been reported that the miracle of young Fortuna’s cure upon praying the 54-day Rosary Novena, made a deep impression on Pope Leo XIII, and in many of his papal encyclicals he urged all Christians to love the Rosary and say it fervently.

On the back of the enclosed prayer card which was recently reprinted, the 54-day Rosary Novena is referred to as the Miraculous Novena.  It is so called because of Fortuna’s miraculous cure and no doubt other miracles that have been reported from those who have prayed the novena.

Our Lady of Fatima asked us to pray the Rosary every day.

Remember Sister Lucy said that in these last times in which we live, Our Lady “has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Rosary to such an extent that there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, whether temporal or above all, spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families, of the families of the world,... that cannot be solved by the Rosary.”

Recalling Sister Lucy’s words, and the promise that Our Lady gave to young Fortuna for praying the 54-day Rosary Novena, how can we not be moved to pray this novena to request the salvation of our own souls, the souls of our children and loved ones, as well as for the Consecration of Russia and peace in the world?

The novena does not have to be in addition to your daily Rosary (although that would be wonderful if you are able to do so).  It can be your daily Rosary.  That is, assuming that you are already praying 5 decades of the Rosary daily, make it in the format of a 54-day Rosary Novena.

Write down your intentions, the date the Rosary begins, and begin the first day with the Joyful Mysteries, following the pattern as mentioned previously in this letter.

Because of my own experience with the outcome of praying this novena, there is seldom a time now, when I am not praying at least one 54-day Rosary Novena.  If you have not prayed a 54-day Rosary Novena, I strongly encourage you to do so.

If you pray this novena for something that you do not see immediate results with, have no doubt that your prayers have been heard.  If you have children who have abandoned the Catholic faith, have no doubt that if you pray this novena with devotion and trust in Our Lady, and without interruption, your prayers will not be in vain.

We are asking you to help make known this devotion by passing it on to others.  To help you do this, we are offering more copies of the enclosed prayer card which explains how to pray this novena.

We are also enclosing a sample table, to help you pray the 54-day Rosary Novena.
