The Fatima Center Calls for the Immediate
Consecration of Florida and the Caribbean Islands to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

September 7, 2017

As extreme Category 5 Hurricane Irma progresses, The Fatima Center calls on all people of good will living in Florida, the Caribbean islands and other places (in danger of) being affected by the storm, to immediately contact their local Catholic bishops, making an urgent appeal for the immediate consecration of their respective territories to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The likely deaths of many people and the probable destruction of countless homes and other properties is frightening. Yet consecration to Our Lady, prayer (especially the Holy Rosary), and processions have been known to prevent not only wars and other crises, but even the seemingly unstoppable forces of nature. This is why the Church provides special texts for a Mass in the Roman Missal and a procession in the Roman Ritual "for imploring fair weather," ad postulandam serenitatem. We need only recall the devotion to Our Lady of Prompt Succor in the taming of hurricanes and the avoiding of other calamities in the southern U.S. in years past.

The state of Florida was privately consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 2003, with the Governor in attendance. Several cities and dioceses in Florida have also been consecrated publicly to the Immaculate Heart, e.g. Miami in May 2013, Pensacola-Tallahassee in December 2013. How much more powerful would a public consecration of the entire state — and other areas — be, if performed by all its bishops? How much more would Our Lady's maternal protection show itself?

As She told us at Fatima in July 1917, "only Our Lady of the Rosary can help us." Mary is truly our Mother and our Queen, ready and willing to aid us in all manner of spiritual and temporal disasters — if only we call upon Her.

While things may seem helpless and hopeless, let us recall Our Lord's words to Sr. Lucia in Rianjo, Spain in August 1931: "It is never too late to have recourse to Jesus and Mary!"

Official prayers of the Church to avert storms (from the Roman Ritual)

From sudden and unprovided death, deliver us, O Lord!
From lightning and tempest, deliver us, O Lord!

Let us pray:

O God, Who art offended by our sins but appeased by our penances, may it please Thee to hear the entreaties of Thy people and to turn away the punishments that our transgressions rightly deserve.

Graciously hear us, O Lord, as we cry to Thee, and grant fair weather to us, Thy suppliants; and although we are justly afflicted for our sins, may we nonetheless experience Thy mercy and so appreciate Thy clemency.

Almighty God, we appeal to Thy kindness, asking that Thou wouldst hold back the inundation of rainfall, and be pleased to show us the cheerfulness of Thy countenance, through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
