News & Views Announcements
- 12/05/13 - The Pronoun Wars: Little Words, Big Consequences
The pronoun wars have begun. They were preceded by skirmishes fought by feminists who deplored the universal usage of the impersonal “he” in prescriptive grammar. They achieved a middling success in imposing their preferred “he/she” or the ungrammatical “they” in place of “he”, thus crushing the elegance and economy of accepted usage under the clumsy hobnail boots of political correctness.
- 12/03/13 - Reflections on the October 13, 2013 Marian Day
No longer is there such a fear of disapproval or of reprisal among those who recognize in the Message of Fatima our only hope for peace in the world. Over the past 6 months, a number of bishops around the world have solemnly consecrated their nations to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The door is indeed opening, but why this need for consecrations, and for yet another consecration of the world (as had been intended by Pope Francis) to the Immaculate Heart of Mary? Which will be the Consecration that Our Lady of Fatima has been awaiting, and that will bring Her promised Triumph?
- 11/18/13 - REFLECTIONS: The Great Divide
Opposition to Obamacare is growing as a result of its onerous mandates which force individuals and institutions to violate their religious beliefs. The ministry of the Little Sisters of the Poor to the aged is threatened, Christian schools are being coerced to breach the religious principles they teach, and for-profit companies are being required to contravene their founding values or pay crippling fines.
- 11/07/13 - Vatican Police Protect the Pope… From Fatima!
Father Nicholas Gruner received from the papal household tickets to attend the papal ceremonies of October 12 and 13, 2013, where he prayed Rosary after Rosary near the statue of Our Lady of Fatima brought from Fatima for the occasion. His prayer intention was that finally the Holy Father would consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This report describes what Father Gruner encountered while attending that weekend’s ceremonies in St. Peter’s Square.
- 10/30/13 - Pope Francis’ October 13 Entrustment
“Pope Francis Consecrates World to the Immaculate Heart”. This was the headline from EWTN, from Vatican Radio, from the National Catholic Register, and other Catholic news outlets. Unfortunately, these headlines are not accurate. Pope Francis’ “Entrustment” ceremony at the Vatican on October 13, 2013 contained no mention of “Consecration”, no mention of the “Immaculate Heart”, and no mention of “world”.
- 9/20/13 - Rules and Some Guidelines for Fasting
Our Blessed Lord Himself sanctioned fasting by fasting for 40 days and 40 nights in the desert; and though He would not impose it on the world by an express commandment, Our Lord showed plainly enough, by His own example, that fasting, which God had so frequently ordered in the Old Testament and Law, was also to be practiced by the children of the New Testament and Law. Our Savior Jesus Christ enjoined and prescribed rules for fasting.
- 8/28/13 - Fatima Is About Love and Peace
Our Lady’s visitations to Fatima manifest the love She has for mankind. It is a revelation of Her Motherly care for Her children. A mother is concerned for the well-being of her little ones. She sees they are nourished, educated and directed in goodness. She works to preserve them from all harm, even in spite of themselves.
- 8/12/13 - Beware the Praise of Your Enemies
Similarities between Pope John XXIII and Pope Francis have been noted in the Catholic blogosphere, with approbation for the new Pope’s re–presentation of those qualities that made the old pope congenial to the media and, presumably, to Catholics in general: simplicity, optimism, spontaneity and, most importantly, a seeming disdain for doctrinal rigor and those who espouse it.
- 7/30/13 - Pro-Abortion Protestors Desecrate Chilean Cathedral
Abortion activists raided a Mass at the cathedral of the Chilean capital in Santiago on July 25. They destroyed confessionals; hauled pews all the way to the Plaza de Armas square in front of the cathedral; smashed ornaments and defaced side altars with blasphemous graffiti.
- 6/25/13 - Questions and Answers About “Fatima: The Path To Peace!”: A Unique Line-up of Speakers
From Sept. 8-13, the Fatima Center is hosting a conference in Niagara Falls, Canada that is, in its own way, unprecedented in its scope. This grand meeting will bring together many people who might otherwise have never made direct contact. The variety of the speakers and their backgrounds have become a source of concern to some of our supporters. The questions and answers presented here represent those concerns and offer an explanation of why this conference has taken the unique shape it has.
- 4/22/13 - Only the Right Prayer Can Protect Us from Asteroids
Regarding the possibility of an asteroid colliding with the earth, U.S. Rep. Bill Posey of Florida last month asked NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, at a March 19 Science Committee hearing on Capitol Hill, “What would we do if you detected even a small one like the one that detonated in Russia headed for New York in three weeks? What would you do?” Bolden replied: “The answer to you is, if it’s coming in three weeks, pray.”
- 4/19/13 - On the Upcoming Consecration of Pope Francis’ Pontificate to Our Lady of Fatima
Cardinal Jose Policarpo, Patriarch of Lisbon and president of the Portuguese Bishops Conference, announced during his opening remarks at their Conference’s 181st Plenary Assembly on Monday, April 8 that Pope Francis had requested him to consecrate his pontificate to Our Lady of Fatima. The Portuguese bishops have decided that this will take place on the upcoming feast of Our Lady, Monday, May 13th at the Shrine.
- 3/11/13 - Interviews, Buzz and Media Men
There are so many journalists now in Rome for the Conclave that we witness journalists interviewing other journalists. This morning I did a three-minute spot for Father Gruners Fatima TV that will be broadcast on their Italian TV station. Chris Ferrara also did his own three-minute segment. This took place outdoors on the rim of Saint Peters Square.
- 3/09/13 - Vatican Press Conference: March 9, 2013
The Vatican Press office held a press briefing on Saturday, March 9 at 1:00 p.m. There are two press offices now in operation: the main Vatican office for full-time Vatican journalists, and an adjacent press office set up in the Paul VI auditorium. Those of us in the Paul VI press office receive a televised transmission of the press conference as it happens.
- 3/08/13 - Keeping Secrets
These days, the Third Secret of Fatima is not the only secret being kept behind the walls of Vatican City. On March 4, 2013, the news agency Reuters reported that the VatiLeaks dossier (the documented outcome of a recent investigation by three Cardinals into the VatiLeaks scandal) will be made available only to the next Pope, a decision that the now Emeritus Benedict XVI had reached prior to his abdication.
- 3/07/13 - Another Prophecy Fulfilled Indicates the Approach of Zero Hour
Buried under all of the political intrigue, as well as under the rampant speculation of who will become the next Pope, is the reality that a significant prophecy is now being fulfilled. In the year 1973, on the conspicuous date of October 13 (the anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima), the Blessed Virgin Mary told Sister Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa, in the often cited Church-approved apparitions of Our Lady of Akita (Japan), “The work of the devil will infiltrate even the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against other bishops.”
- 3/04/13 - Saint Alphonsus Liguori: Concerning the Election of a New Pope
Saint Alphonsus Liguori's thoughts on the election of a new Pontiff are expressed in a letter (provided here) written to an unnamed bishop in 1774 before the election of Pope Pius VI. When we read what Saint Alphonsus Liguori had to say in the late 18th Century, we can hardly imagine what his comments would be today. To quote Saint Alphonsus, “There is need for prayer and much prayer”.
- 3/01/13 - Prayers for the Papal Conclave
In preparation for the upcoming conclave, we request the faithful to pray a novena of prayers, consisting of the Veni Creator Spiritus, the collect of the votive Mass for the election of a Sovereign Pontiff, a prayer to St. Joseph, and several ejaculations — provided here.
- 2/25/13 - Do Recent Natural Events Mean Anything?
Our times considerably influenced and shaped by Naturalism, a philosophy which maintains that all phenomena can only be accounted for naturally — that is, to the exclusion of a divine purpose and origin — events such as that of the 2012 DA14 asteroid, which zoomed past the earth on February 15, 2013 at an eyebrow-raising 17,200 miles above the planet’s surface; the meteorite that exploded over Russia earlier that same day; the fireballs reported and confirmed to have been seen in the skies over California, Florida and Cuba; the lightning bolt that struck the very top of St. Peter’s Basilica on February 11, 2013; and the 4.9 magnitude earthquake of February 16, 2013, which struck the Lazio region of Italy have no real significance besides that which is of interest to the scientific community.
- 2/18/13 - The “Original Sin” of Vatican II
Italian journalist Sandro Magister published a February 9 article on his Chiesa website that attracted much attention. The article, entitled “The Impossible ‘Road Map’ of Peace with the Lefebvrists”, spotlighted a recently-released book by Professor Enrico Radaelli; a “philosopher, theologian, and believed disciple of one of the greatest traditional Catholic thinkers of the twentieth century, the Swiss Romano Amerio (1905-1997)”. In his book, Radaelli’s critique of Vatican II echoes the prophetic warning given by Archbishop Lefebvre prior to the Council’s opening.
- 2/15/13 - Physician, Heal Thyself: A Suffering Pope Abdicates
Andrea Tornielli, the well-known Vatican journalist who spoke at our “Consecration Now!” conference in 2011, wrote an article on February 12 for La Stampa about Pope Benedict’s resignation, entitled “The meaning of the Pope’s gesture.” The article begins with Tornielli addressing Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz’s startling comment from this past Monday, that Pope John Paul II did not step down from the papacy because “he [John Paul II] was convinced that one doesn’t come down from the cross.”
- 1/25/13 - Protecting Our Children’s Innocence Is the Real Issue of Gay “Marriage”
As western leaders continue in their bold attempts to fashion North America and Europe into Socialist utopias, based on principles which are fundamentally anti-Christian, an increasing number of people are protesting against these attempts by western governments to redefine, essentially, what it means to be human. The Socialist paradigm is built, in part, on a “progressive” understanding of human relationships.
- 1/05/13 - January Thoughts: Why the ‘Post-Christian World’ Clings to Christmas
We are living in a time of what might be called parallel liturgies: one religious, one secular, with the latter vying to replace the former. This attempted usurpation has prompted religious media to chronicle each year what has been called “the war against Christmas.”
- 11/30/12 - Nothing Traditional About It: Pope Benedict's Approach to Modern Judaism
Pope Benedict XVI, whom some people regard as traditional, is actually a man dedicated to the new orientation of Vatican II. This is especially apparent in Pope Benedict's dealing with modern Judaism, which is based on the Council's teaching on the Jews found in the document Nostra Aetate.
- 11/15/12 - Of Penance and Pork Chops
As of this writing, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is meeting in Baltimore to consider whether it might be a good idea to reinstate meatless Fridays. Cardinal Timothy Dolan is the man of the hour, beating the drum for penance, exhorting the bishops to live the Faith more deeply so they may be qualified to lead the laity to greater piety. All this is occurring in the wake of a presidential election that underscored the irrelevance of the bishops — and the Catholic Faith — as a determining factor in how most Catholics vote — and presumably live.
- 10/22/12 - Celebrating a Catastrophe
Traditional Catholics should be long past simply defending their position against the architects of destruction. The situation calls for an all-out offensive against the catastrophic Second Vatican Council...
- 10/18/12 - Be Still and Know That l Am God
Pascal once said most of the troubles in the world arise from the fact that few men are capable of sitting quietly in their own rooms. Of course, one might counter this observation by noting that Pascal himself failed to follow its counsel and spent much of the ebbing energies of his brief life in public argument with the Jesuits. But the truth of a principle should never be measured by the ability of its enunciator to adhere to it.
- 9/14/12 - Behold the Three-LLL LLLama
There is a much misunderstood statement to the effect that we create our own reality. It gained currency in the 1960s, when Eastern thought was imported to the West without warning labels.
- 8/03/12 - A Cautionary Tale for Catholic Bishops
Every objective indicator points to the rapid decline and eventual demise of the Episcopal Church in America. From a membership of 3 million in 1970, the church now claims about 1 million adherents. And mind you, these are official figures. The number of Episcopalians regularly attending services and offering financial support may be much lower.
- 7/06/12 - Archbishop Di Noia Admits: The Goal is to Convert SSPX to Conciliar Thinking
In 1946, Father Garrigou-Lagrange warned in his landmark article against the modernist New Theology, “Those who have attempted to attend the classes of the masters of modernist thought in order to convert them have allowed themselves to be converted by them.” It is clear the same ruse is being applied to the Society of St. Pius X.
- 5/29/12 - Fatima For Today: A Response
In his book on what he calls “the Urgent Marian Message of Hope”, Father Andrew Apostoli advances the Vatican Secretary of State’s “Party Line” on Fatima. The result is not “an urgent message of hope” but yet another attempt to bury the Third Secret and defend the refusal to consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
- 4/16/12 - The Annulment of Liberal Catholicism
It appears that the ill-fated marriage between liberalism and Catholicism is on the rocks. The Catholic bishops in the United States have been likened to the left wing of the Democratic Party at prayer. Now, the prayer meeting is breaking up.
- 3/28/12 - Not Sufficient?
On March 16, 2012 an unsigned communiqué from the Vatican Press Office advised that a secret “evaluation” of Bishop Fellay’s secret response to the secret “Doctrinal Preamble,” emanating from the secret proceedings of the Vatican-SSPX conferences, has determined (in secret) that the response is “not sufficient to overcome the doctrinal problems that are at the basis of the rift between the Holy See and the aforesaid Society.” Bishop Fellay was “invited to be so kind as to clarify his position so as to heal the existing rift, as Pope Benedict XVI wished.”
- 2/13/12 - Steering the Barque of Peter
A mark of maturity is the ability to postpone gratification. This mark is notably absent in our time. Our society appears incapable of taking the rational long view and instead rushes toward whatever is immediately attractive, even if that shining bauble takes us to the edge of a precipice and into an abyss.
- 1/09/12 - Occupy Heaven?
Downtown and commercial districts in cities from New York to Oakland and across Europe added a new and by now universally recognizable feature in 2011: a sprawling field of multi-colored nylon tents. Inside the tents, or mulling around them, are the eclectic group labeled generically as “Occupy Wall Street.” So varied and complex a collection of humanity poses difficulties for print and broadcast media, whose reporters and newsreaders deal in simple sound bytes, not detailed and thoughtful analysis.
- 11/15/11 - Assisi III: Pagan Gods Invoked in Catholic Basilica
A pan-religious prayer meeting for peace was held at Assisi on October 27, 2011. Members of various world religions had been invited by Pope Benedict to attend the gathering, which marked the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s first Assisi meeting in 1986. There are Catholics throughout the world greatly disturbed by these pan-religious gatherings.
- 10/12/11 - Crossing the Threshold of Tolerance
Father Donat Gionet is not allowed to say Mass or administer the sacraments. The bishop of Bathurst has suspended him. His offense, according to a Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC) report, is that he preached sermons condemning homosexuality and abortion. Father Gionet is surprised, as he does not believe he did anything wrong. The CBC report cites unnamed “representatives” of the Bathurst Diocese who said Father Gionet's sermons made some of his parishioners “uncomfortable.”
- 09/26/11 - The Pope in the Docket
We are told that the International Criminal Court at The Hague was created to investigate and prosecute war crimes. In effect, this has meant those nations who lose wars may find their military and political leaders charged and tried before the tribunal. Those who win wars are immune from such prosecution. The Vatican is losing its war against secularism in the West. The implementation of Vatican II’s Declaration on Religious Liberty has led to the elimination of the few remaining Catholic confessional states. The Church no longer enjoys a privileged position in the civil statutes of any nation outside the small plot of land ruled by the Pope in Rome.
- 08/25/11 - An Unholy Alliance: Newspapers and the Government
The obituary for print journalism will have to be published on the Internet, that is, if a significant number of people are to read it. Few, I think, will shed a tear at the demise of this not-so-venerable institution. Newspapers, like universal literacy, are of relatively recent vintage, and the generation for whom the daily reading of broadsheet and tabloid became a habit have already, or will fairly soon, meet their own deadline, so to speak.
- 08/15/11 - Sister Wives? Oh, Brother!
Reality TV has become increasingly, well, unreal. The array of programming that documents the lives of a menagerie of people in “interesting” situations is incontrovertible proof of Catholic novelist Evelyn Waugh’s statement that one cannot write satire in the modern world because the modern world will always trump satire with reality.
- 06/01/11 - Some Thoughts about a New Liturgical Reform and the Suggested Future 'Common Rite'
The Mass is at the center of a priest's life. It is his principal duty, privilege and honor to stand in persona Christi at the altar and to make present there, by repeating the very words of Our Savior, the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ under the appearance of bread and wine. Any proposal that would effect the celebration of Mass necessarily affects, profoundly and intimately, the life of the priest. And since it is through their attendance at Sunday Mass that most Catholics come into contact with the Faith and receive the sacramental graces available to them, any alteration in the rite of the Holy Sacrifice will in some way alter the laity's understanding of Church doctrine and discipline.
- 05/26/11 - Public Opinion Polls Apart
The media's consummate concern with politics has led to the perpetual taking of polls, as though the electorate were an intensive-care patient whose vital signs must be constantly monitored. The validity of certain polls is sometimes questioned, as is their purpose. Who chooses the questions, formulates their phrasing, selects the cross-section of the public to be surveyed? There appears ample opportunity for manipulating results, which has added a relatively new word to our lexicon: push-poll. Two recent polls are topping the news as of this writing: one concerns abortion, the other, homosexual "marriage."
- 04/12/11 - We Can't Shrug Off "Atlas Shrugged"
Ayn Rand wrote novels that were intended to illustrate ideas rather than characters, and her work suffers from the literary shortcomings peculiar to that genre: the people she portrays are rather wooden, their dialogue stilted, the plots improbable. The newly released movie adaptation of Rand's chief work, "Atlas Shrugged" is not just a film: it is a challenge to a generally accepted code of ethics rooted in the Christian counsels on fraternal charity. Rand's philosophy is called Objectivism. It maintains that human reason, based on sense perceptions, provide us with the only real knowledge we can have. It rejects faith as irrational.
- 03/28/11 - No Irony Intended: The Trial of Bishop Williamson
While Americans will be lighting firecrackers this Fourth of July to celebrate freedom, a courtroom in Germany will convene in a very different spirit: the prosecution of a Roman Catholic bishop for expressing an opinion.
- 02/22/11 - Courting the Gentiles
Our modern world has unfolded in such a manner as to make the late Catholic luminary Hilaire Belloc appear not only perspicacious but prophetic. As many as 80 years ago, between the two great wars of the last century, Belloc observed that we were witnessing the beginning of something we had never before seen. He called it the new paganism.
- 11/03/10 - The True Melting Pot
In 1905, Israel Zangwill was the toast of New York City, as his popular play The Melting Pot celebrated the ideal of America as a true utopia where the divisions and animosities of the Old World, based on religions and ethnicities, were dissolved in the fire of a new brotherhood of man. … The extent to which Zangwill's play reflected the realities of the New World may be doubted, but the aspirations it represented were, and remain, quite real.
- 10/14/10 - New Evangelization, Old Rhetoric
On the 93rd anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima, the attention of those who chronicle the doings and sayings of the Holy See was concentrated on a rather mundane event of dubious significance: the establishment of a new Vatican bureaucracy.
- 9/16/10 - Israel Fuels Speculation on War Preparations
Two events in the Middle East indicate that mounting tensions between Israel and Iran may soon result in military action by Israel. In early August, the Bushehr civilian nuclear power plant became operational. About the same time, the U.S. Department of Defense asked Congress to approve the sale of massive quantities of military grade jet fuel to Israel, along with substantial amounts of diesel and unleaded gasoline designated for military use.
- 9/13/10 - Change We Can Believe In
All of our institutions — ecclesial, political, financial, familial — are mired in habitual crises of one sort or another. A crisis is said to exist when opposing forces are poised for a final conflict that will lead us in one of two radically different directions. The widespread sexual abuse of adolescents and children by some of the clergy and the subsequent cover-ups are now routinely labeled by the media as a crisis for the Catholic Church. If the designation is accurate, what opposing forces are in conflict? Between what radically divergent courses must the Church decide?
- 9/9/10 - The Fatima Message and the Problem of False Obedience
The subjects of this article are: (1) the evident suppression of a text of the Third Secret of Fatima that would explain and accompany the vision of the "Bishop dressed in White" published under the auspices (strangely enough) of the Vatican Secretary of State on June 26, 2000; and (2) the obviously not done Consecration of Russia which Cardinal Bertone would forbid us from talking about. Rather than reviewing the evidence, the focus here will be on a great obstacle to accomplishment of the imperatives of the Fatima Message: false obedience.
- 8/20/10 - That Still Small Voice
Among the many casualties of the Second Vatican Council lay the careful words of John Cardinal Newman concerning conscience. A great load of doctrinal dissent has been placed on the frail Cardinal's shoulders as a result of his entirely orthodox statement made in the context of a dispute about the fitness of Catholics to be loyal subjects of the British Crown.
- 8/4/10 - Of Vanity, Vice and Vampires
There are consistent themes in the Marian apparitions approved by the Church: the call for prayer and sacrifice and deeper conversion; and warnings of disasters that will afflict this world if we do not heed this call. There is another aspect of these visitations from the Queen of Heaven: the seers are usually chosen from among the humblest of children. The seers are almost always illiterate and poor, with a simple but deep Faith.
- 8/02/10 - Diabolical Disorientation Update
While Pope Benedict is engaged in the quiet pursuit of literary composition at his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, Rome is roiled in yet another priestly sex scandal. The popular Italian magazine Panorama has been busy following priests through the gay bars of Rome and chronicling their double lives: priest by day, homosexual reveler by night.
- 7/16/10 - Fatima: The Most Inconvenient Truth
The art of fence-sitting is a delicate one, as is admirably illustrated by Inside the Vatican editor Dr. Robert Moynihan. He chose the 93rd anniversary of the July 13 apparition at Fatima to offer us his thoughts on the subject of apparitions in general and to balance himself carefully on his perch between the two controverted questions of the Third Secret and the Consecration of Russia.
- 6/25/10 - Special News Release: Truth about the Third Secret is out — and on Italian TV
Well-respected Vatican journalists, such as Andrea Tornielli, are now saying what we have long said: There is a hidden part of the Third Secret. Tornielli made the claim on mainstream Italian television, which just aired a program called: "Fatima: An Unfinished Business." This program also featured comments by Father Nicholas Gruner, who has led the fight of this apostolate for 33 years and who brought The Fatima Challenge to Rome. And Rome listened. The Pope listened. Now, all of Italy is listening.
- 6/9/10 - Ecumenism Runs Amok
The Los Angeles Times reported on June 9 that the Claremont School of Theology, long identified with the Methodist sect, has decided to become the nation's first multi-faith seminary. The school hopes eventually to offer clerical training for Buddhists and Hindus, according to the Times. Claremont's action received an enthusiastic endorsement from David Roozen, the director of the Institute for Religion Research at the Hartford Seminary in Connecticut.
- 4/30/10 - Please Pray for Success of The Fatima Challenge in Rome
The Fatima Challenge is a five-day symposium to be held in Rome from May 3-7, 2010. The goal of this symposium is to gather writers, experts, publishers, etc., on the Fatima Message, discussing in an atmosphere of charity and civility especially the points on which Fatima writers disagree, such as the Consecration of Russia and the release of the Third Secret.
- 3/25/10 - An Anniversary That Could Have Been
March 25 is the Feast of the Annunciation. It is the feast day chosen by Pope John Paul II to consecrate the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1984. When Mary was told that She was to conceive by the Holy Ghost, She replied, “Let it be done unto me according to Thy word.” This was the glorious fiat, the moment when God became man in the womb of the Virgin. It was the beginning of our redemption from the great refusal in the Garden of Eden.
- 3/16/10 - Ferrara’s Latest Exposé on the Third Secret: An Answer to Socci’s Critics — “Friendly Reflections?”
An article and a widely circulated booklet by one Antonio A. Borelli, purporting to “clarify” the debate over the Third Secret of Fatima and the Consecration of Russia, together comprise what is actually a study in obfuscation. But, as the following commentary shows, Borelli inadvertently demonstrates what has become morally certain: that part of the Third Secret — the explanatory words of the Virgin — has yet to be revealed, and that the Consecration has yet to be done.
- 3/12/10 - Vatican Bedeviled
For most people today, satan is symbolic. Rather than denoting a personal being, the name is used to describe someone or something of which we strongly disapprove on ethical grounds. The prince of darkness has become a metaphor: he is no longer an angelic intelligence who preferred to rule in hell than serve in Heaven.
- 3/04/10 - Vietnam Government Blows Up Crucifix
On January 6 Vietnamese officials dynamited a crucifix in a cemetery belonging to the Dong Chiem Parish Church, 40 miles from Hanoi. Parishioners who tried to prevent the destruction were beaten by police. Since then, Catholic priests and faithful have been assaulted by uniformed and plainclothes police, and Catholics who try to visit the parish are harassed and beaten; one journalist pummeled to unconsciousness. The latest outrage is a February 24 attack on a group of nuns visiting various parishes in the area.
- 2/05/10 - Serbian Patriarch Proposes Summit with Pope
In a development that may justly be called astounding, Patriarch Irinej Gavrilovic, the newly chosen head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, held a press conference on Jan. 28 to suggest that it was time the Pope and Orthodox leaders met to discuss ways of healing the longstanding schism with Rome.
- 2/03/10 - Pope Fires Another Salvo Against Secularism
Looking at the Catholic Church these days, one is reminded of those old World War II newsreels of cities reduced to rubble by bombs and artillery shells. There is not an institution that has not suffered damage from ill-conceived reforms enacted after the Second Vatican Council in the name of modernization. Yet, this damage has been self-inflicted. The Church has been hit by misdirected “friendly fire”.
- 1/11/10 - Free Will, Defined by Nancy Pelosi
St. Augustine tells us not to be concerned if we be constrained, so long as we be constrained to the good.
Such advice, so ancient and yet so timely, illustrates that our desire for freedom is as constant as our misunderstanding of it. And to avoid any misinterpretation of St. Augustine’s counsel, let us also remember that it was he who also said: “Love, and do what you will.”
- 11/26/09 - Weigel May Be Right about Something
Professional thinker George Weigel may have revealed a truth about the purpose of the “conversations” taking place between the Society of St. Pius X and the Vatican. In his November 18 column in the Denver Catholic Register, Weigel shakes his head, and finger, at those less enlightened scribblers who have characterized the talks as “negotiations.”
- 11/12/09 - National Catholic Reporter’s John Allen
Makes Case for Secularism
A wise man once remarked that logic and liberalism cannot co-exist in the same head. Illustrating this truth yet again is National Catholic Reporter’s John Allen, who chose to write Nov. 6 of Pope Benedict XVI’s supposed “lenience” for what Allen calls “cafeteria Catholicism” on the right.
- 11/09/09 - Evolution Theory Getting Rocked in Rome
There is good news for the many informed Catholics and scientists who have been dismayed by the Church’s seeming surrender to Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. His theory posits the gradual development and mutation of species through geological ages that span — according to his fantastic ideas — “millions of years”.
- 11/04/09 - ‘Secular’ Italy May No Longer Have Cross to Bear
The Italian government must pay a fine of 5,000 Euros for refusing to remove crucifixes from a public school, according to the Associated Press. The ruling was issued by the European Court of Human Rights in response to a complaint filed in 2006 which claimed the presence of a crucifix in the classroom violated the secularism that is supposed to be upheld in the nation’s public schools.
- 10/07/09 - Time for a Miracle
In the long death knell for religion in the West, yet another peal has been rung in the form of a study showing that the gap between those who profess a faith and those who do not is closing. Soon, it is projected, the un-churched and the churched will stare at one another across the great divide in equal numbers, but with the momentum decidedly on the side of the un-churched. And more than a third of those who disclaim allegiance to a particular creed say they were raised Catholic.
- 9/30/09 - Blasphemy Day to be Held in Washington, D.C.
Today has been declared International Blasphemy Day by an organization called the Center For Inquiry DC. Those who deny or doubt the existence of God are invited to express their disbelief in a variety of media, including painting, poetry, sculpture, speechmaking and any other form that gives expression to atheism, agnosticism or hostility toward religion.

- 9/10/09 - The Real Tragedy of 9-11
Every year, as Sept. 11 approaches, there is an air of uneasiness as America waits and watches to see if any act of carnage will be perpetrated as a grisly memorial to the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001. There is heightened concern for the safety of historic monuments and some of us are inclined to avoid crowds in public places.

Those who have been a patient in a hospital or taken a loved one to the hospital know that it is a paperwork nightmare. Indeed just going to the doctor’s office for the first time or after a long period of time has lapsed, usually involves filling out at least a few different forms. Generally upon admittance to a hospital, one of the questions asked is, have you filled out a Health Care Proxy form or do you have a Health Care Proxy? See “The Diabolical Disorientation in the Secular World — ‘Health Care’ (Part 1)” for related article.

On Oct. 7, 2007, Sen. Barack Obama spoke to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund and promised, “The first thing I’d do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. That’s the first thing I'll do.” What is the Freedom of Choice Act? It is the most sweeping pro-abortion legislation ever proposed in the United States. It is clear the FOCA raises abortion to what it calls a “fundamental right.” Yet it is not clear if Catholics realize the threat that Mr. Obama poses to the unborn, to believing Catholics in the medical profession, and to Catholic hospitals across the nation.

A march for peace throughout India: this is what the Indian bishops are asking for in response to the very serious episodes of violence that are still reverberating in this Asian country. - 08/27/08 - Fatima and Russia’s New War
No student of the true Message of Fatima is surprised by the war now erupting between Georgia and Russia. … Those who have warned for years that hostilities with Russia will break out at some future date were often laughed to scorn. … But not everyone is blind. Since hostilities broke out on August 8, a number of those in the secular media frankly admit their belief that the Cold War never really came to a close. Even secular journalists note that since the alleged collapse of Communism, we have not seen a period of peace, nor have we seen evidence that Moscow wants to relinquish control over its satellite states.
- 08/12/08 - The Diabolical Disorientation
in the Secular World — “Health Care” (Part 1)
Many of us tend to think of the diabolical disorientation spoken of by Sister Lucy (one of the three seers of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima) mainly in regard to the Catholic Church and the spiritual realm. But as the Church goes, so goes the world — and logically so. God’s ways are perfect. The one true Church of God is the Catholic Church established by Our Lord Jesus Christ. Catholicism as established by Our Lord is a way of life. God’s ways are right-thinking and His laws are perfect. But the more a person strays from Truth, that is, from the Catholic Faith, the more skewed his thinking may become. Mind you, his thinking may be just as the world wants him to think, but generally the way the world thinks is completely different from God’s ways, and often anti-God…

For the last four decades many who have clung to the Mass of all time have been ridiculed, falsely accused of being in schism, and most of all falsely accused of being “disobedient” to the “magisterium, since the old Mass is outlawed”. devious web of deceit spun by certain people in the Vatican, the fictional Da

- 03/19/08 - “Pray a Great Deal for the Holy Father... ” May He Re-affirm the Traditional Good Friday Prayer.
I am just a simple Catholic who believes, like other Catholics, that we must know our Faith in order to help save our own souls and to help all the souls whom God places on our path. We must also do our Catholic duty by defending the Faith…. So without the terminology of professional theologians or canon lawyers, I can give in simple language the viewpoint of an ordinary Catholic layman with regard to the February 4, 2008 indication given by Pope Benedict XVI, regarding the Good Friday prayer for the conversion of the Jews, in the old Latin Rite. This we are told was done in an attempt to appease outspoken members of some Jewish groups who complain they don't want Catholics praying for their conversion.
