Epistle  •  1 Corinthians 1:26-31

Lesson from the first Epistle of Blessed Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians.

[The world was to be saved by the preaching of the Cross, and not by human wisdom or strength.]

Brethren, See your vocation, that there are not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble: but the foolish things of the world hath God chosen, that He may confound the wise, and the weak things of the world hath God chosen, that He may confound the strong; and the base things of the world, and the things that are contemptible hath God chosen, and things that are not, that He might bring to nought things that are: that no flesh should glory in His sight.

But of Him are you in Christ Jesus, Who of God is made unto us wisdom, and justice, and sanctification, and redemption; that as it is written: “He that glorieth, may glory in the Lord.”

Gospel  •  Matthew 11:25-30

Continuation of the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.

[Christ recalls to Him such as are sensible of their burdens.]

At that time, Jesus answered, and said: I praise Thee, O Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because Thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to little ones. Yea, Father; for so it hath seemed good in Thy sight. All things are delivered to Me by My Father; and no one knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither doth anyone know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal Him.

Come to Me, all you that labor, and are burdened; and I will refresh you. Take up My yoke upon you, and learn of Me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls: for My yoke is sweet, and My burden light.
